Protect Canadians from threats

Safety and security experts working under the Canadian Safety and Security Program aim to strengthen Canada’s ability to anticipate, prevent, mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism, crime, natural disasters, and serious accidents.

Create opportunities for members of the public safety and security community. Work with science and technology experts to develop the knowledge, tools and advice that safeguards Canadians lives. Experts contribute to the development of capabilities that help to:

  • secure the flow of people, goods, and services across Canadian borders;
  • protect first responders and Canadians against chemical, biological, radiological-nuclear, and explosive threats and hazards;
  • support Canada’s ability to manage national and international emergencies; and
  • defend our critical infrastructure from physical and cyber-attacks.

 The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) as well as our first responders (police, firefighters and paramedics) need to be prepared to respond to a variety of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) scenarios. Decontaminating a radiological source, responding to a natural disaster or deploying to the site of a suspected terrorist attack are just a few examples.
