Why I Joined Defence Research and Development Canada

“As someone who is new to DRDC, I have already learned so much in such a short time. The high-calibre research, the friendly people and the international collaborations make DRDC a fantastic place to work. Knowing that my research will help the Canadian Armed Forces and the defence of Canada is such a rewarding feeling. I’m so thrilled to have joined the DRDC family.”

Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) is recognized as an employer of choice, not only because the work is inherently interesting but because of the sense of community established across the agency. DRDC’s workforce of experts is drawn from a variety of disciplines, cultures and backgrounds, united in their commitment to the defence, safety and security of Canada.

“I like the fact that my job is fairly random. I work in a group that supports a multitude of projects and different trial environments. Traditionally I am doing a lot of sea trials, operating various different equipment so it’s not the same thing – day in, day out. So one minute I’m working on tracking divers under the water in a harbour and now I am 800 km from the North Pole, putting stuff in the ice – it’s pretty awesome.”

Many defence scientists, technologists and engineers work at DRDC for long periods of time, some their entire careers. The dedication to scientific research and improving the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Canada’s defence and security is a passion shared by many defence science professionals.

“DRDC has provided an excellent opportunity for both real world implementation and novel scientific development which would be difficult to attain in typical university or industry settings. The environment really is a "world is your oyster" type of setting and you just have to use the ample opportunities to fully develop your career and scientific discoveries.”

“As a new Defence Scientist at DRDC, I have the chance to work on very interesting research projects. I am surrounded by fantastic people who make DRDC a great environment to evolve in. It is very motivating to work with the CAF on the future of Canada’s defence capabilities.”

—Pierre-Luc is a Defence Scientist working with radiological defence and detection technologies

“I’ve been working at the DRDC Ottawa Research Centre on the Shirleys Bay campus for more than four years and I really appreciate the work/life balance I’ve been provided here. The diverse community, great camaraderie and ample outdoor green spaces make it the best location I’ve ever worked.”

—Sandra is a Procurement Purchasing Officer that works in Corporate Services

“I joined DRDC after working in the private sector for a few years because of the unique science and technology (S&T) challenges presented by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). To provide physical and medical solutions against biological hazards facing the CAF, I have discovered that I have to work with experts from other fields using a multidisciplinary approach, which provides exciting opportunities. Working at DRDC allows me easy access to subject matter experts both nationally and internationally, in all areas of S&T, so that a team can collaborate and deliver tangible solutions that influence the military. I am proud to work alongside these dedicated individuals every day and I am proud to be able to contribute.”

DRDC team members are recognized for their skills, talents and contributions. Professional development, talent management and mentorship programs are available to DRDC employees to support career progression.

"This is what DRDC is about. We apply science and technology to address the full spectrum of the needs of the Canadian Armed Forces, from recruitment and training to technical requirements for equipment, the development of doctrine, and care for the injured and their families.  Our job is to make their job as safe and effective as possible.”

—Steven, a former Director of Navy Science and Technology, is a Defence Scientist and the Executive Chair of The Technical Cooperation Program’s Maritime Systems Group

“Since joining DRDC, I made a transition from studying nanomaterials in an applied physics laboratory to conducting research on issues related to public safety and security. The experience has been extremely rewarding in that I can see the real impact of my work contributing towards protecting Canadians from threats. I also love the continuous learning environment of DRDC. In my physics days I would have never imagined developing expertise in domains like emergency management and social networks!”

“Working at DRDC is the perfect career for me. On a daily basis, I get to apply my quantitative and problem solving skills against challenging, real-world problems. The solutions I and my team come up with can directly impact the safety and effectiveness of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces. The highlights of my job include working closely with military personnel to ensure that my work remains relevant, collaborating with colleagues nationally and internationally to find the best possible tools and techniques to solve the hardest problems, and the opportunity to travel internationally.”
